The Hawker P.1127 was the first British development aircraft that led to the BAE Harrier, the first vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL) jet fighter-bomber. Development began in 1957, using the specially developed Bristol Pegasus vectored thrust engine. By the end of 1960, the aircraft had achieved vertical take-off, handing and the transition to horizontal flight.
